Licensed Professional Counselor
While working with some of my very first clients, I found that nearly every client was experiencing a significant relationship concern. Through this, I saw the impact that discord in a relationship can have on an individual’s emotional and mental wellness. I then shifted my clinical focus from working with individuals to working primarily with couples on these relationship issues. Now, I work with couples focusing on increasing intimacy, repairing trust, managing conflict, and reconnecting emotionally with one another after months or years of distance. I also enjoy working with intercultural couples and exploring how partners’ differing world views impact their relationship.
As a systemic couple’s counselor, I view a relationship as a system or emotional unit. This means that I see conflict or emotional distance in a relationship, not as being the fault of one person, but as a pattern or cycle within the system that is impacted and perpetuated by both partners as well as outside influences. This view allows couples and me to identify many possible adjustments in the system which might help lessen a concern. I have found that exploring multiple options often helps the couple find what is most effective for their relationship.
In my time as a couple’s counselor, I found that couples often struggle with sexual intimacy concerns but find it difficult to talk about it with their partner(s). This is often related to internalized negative messages about sex, past sexual or religious trauma, and discomfort with vulnerability in a relationship. I hope to help create a sex-positive environment for my clients to feel free to talk about these concerns with their partner(s) in therapy and at home.
